NEW ART PLAYERS, GUWAHATI

Society · Friendship · Art

A socio-cultural institution serving Assam and Northeast India since 1954.

Seven Decades of Art and Friendship

New Art Players was born in 1954, when a group of young high school leaving examinees in Guwahati, drawn together by their love of dramatics, staged a play — and founded an institution. Registered under the Societies’ Registration Act XXI of 1860 in April 1959, NAP opened its journey with Durgeswar Barthakur’s Assamese play Jibonor Pachoa.

In the decades since, the organisation has been a torchbearer in the socio-cultural life of Assam and the Northeast — pioneering drama festivals, chorus and children’s drama competitions, Borgeet and elocution contests, classical music and dance festivals, and public lectures, all in pursuit of the cultural revitalisation of society.
